DirecTV uses only living people in new spot

The DirecTV commercial with Chris Farley (for which David Spade was reportedly paid $200,000) seems to have disappeared from the airwaves, and has been replaced by the Wayne's World 2 spot above with Dana Carvey and Kim Basinger, neither of whom perished years ago from drug abuse. I wouldn't classify this as a famous movie scene. Garth was always an annoying, second-rate character. Still, Basinger is pretty captivating, and overall it's an improvement over the Tommy Boy fiasco. Some people are hard to please, though—like Matthew Kelley, who says he finds the Basinger/Carvey ad "offensive because both their careers are dead."

This is a great ad because it has what all great ads have: a woman with big bristolas. As a marketing genius, I know that a woman with big bristolas is pretty much guaranteed to shift units.

The other stuff in the ad, like the failed comedian, I feel ambivalent about. You can ignore a has-been. You can't ignore a has-boobs.

Ok, but when I see this ad I'm confused--did what's her name die? Did what's his name die? Is one of them from archival footage, the other from current? He looks old--he's new? Wait--has she had work done? Are any of these scenes from movies? I have no idea what's going on. I keep watching the spot, though, for clues.

Wait, Directv did a spot with a dead Chris Farley? I must have missed that in the non-stop, non-story coverage you all gave it.

i'm a little confused as to why they market 1080p with movies that came out before HD was even conceived.

Kim Basinger looks like an animated mannequin in that ad. It's creepy.

Know what I think they did with Basinger? It's actually her that filmed that commerical...but they digitally removed wrinkles and other signs of aging. It can be done very easily these days and makes it hardly noticeable. The opening scene of X-Men 3 where Professor X and Magneto visit Jean's house that takes place thirty years prior, and they look young - same procedure.
