Auto dealer's ad likens women to used cars
A Canadian car dealer isn't making many new female friends this week after running an ad suggesting his used vehicles are like women who've been around the block once or twice themselves. "You know you're not the first. But do you really care?" says Dale Wurfel's full-page ad in Ontario's London Free Press, showing a lady posing semi-provocatively. (See the full ad after the jump.) Sociological Images points out that the ad could be seen as progressive in its rejection of a sexual double standard—though of course it's a bit regressive in its likening of a woman to a pre-owned pile of junk you'll enjoy driving. This same concept has actually been tried before, in a (possibly spec) BMW ad from Greece, also posted after the jump. Via Work That Matters. |

Really? Or is the woman saying that to the male reader, as in HE is not HER first? And if not, it's more than a bit of assumption to think that the woman has "been around the block once or twice" herself.
Tim, it seems that you are guilty of the same crimes you accuse the advert of.
Somebody will always find something to be insulted about in even the most innocuous of messages.

Bravo. The biggest mistake an agency can make is to play it safe.

Cap'n - No, I don't think that's what the ad is saying.

I find that 4.99% financing rate to be the really offensive thing in this ad.

If the ad is so "progressive", then why aren't they using a guy in it? After all, not everyone who buys a car is male.

Oh, no! You mean they're capitalizing off of the historical fact that most women lie about their sexual history? Perish the thought.

women are so dirty, im catholic and finding a virgin these days is impossible

The beauty of news stories is that they leave out crucial information. Perhaps the fact that the same ad was run with a picture of a man would have been relevant to this news story?

Stacey, where and when did that ad run? And do you have a copy of it?
Posted by: Tim Nudd | Apr 14, 2011 5:18:53 PM
I think everyone knows what type of people would make a fuss about this. People that have nothing more important in they're life than trying to drag others down with negativity. The thing I find interesting is that there was barely a peep made about the same ad that had a man in the picture instead of a woman....Talk about double standards

Chris - So, there was a second ad with a man in it, that had the same headline? Where is this ad?

The one with the woman was this past friday and the man was the next day on the back page of the automotive section i believe in the london free press. I don't see it on here anywhere though!!!

I wonder if 'womens groups' have kicked up a stink about the ad that featured a man?

the male version:

This ads are very enticing. The ads are probably the most sexiest I have ever seen.

I like your way of advertising. Keep going.

That's just foul. I can never respect people who like these degrading edifices. Women deserve respect. We cannot question their value based on virginity.

I'm a female but I don't find the ad insulting. Why is the author assuming that it is the WOMAN who is telling the guy that HE is not her first? Of course everyone is assuming that the guy should be offended because he is not her first; just that interpretation is offensive. People may have double standards and not be aware of it because it's ingrained to deeply in their subconscious and psyche.

I think it is a cars' blog and every one is commenting about women.
Why is it.
Please come to the point and let's have some discussion about cars.

wow it is amazing how things have changed? so is it because women are less likely to buy used cars or something?

This ad is a resounding success, because it did just what it was designed to do: get attention! Heck, a Canadian car dealer made it onto the Adweek blog. Offensive? Perhaps. Provocative? Definitely!!
