BMW now etching its logo onto your eyelids

By David Kiefaber on Mon Dec 20 2010

Bmw

A recent BMW movie-theater ad in Germany burned an image of the automaker's logo on the backs of viewers' eyelids—just in case any of them didn't already associate the brand with evil rich people. Never mind how they did it—a better question is why they felt the need to. They're not some unknown startup that needs to grab market share, so what made them insecure enough to go all Lightspeed Briefs on us? I shudder to think. Agency: Serviceplan in Munich. Billboard unnerves forgetful Connecticuters

Posted on Tue Jan 26 2010

Bmw

BMW of Bridgeport is offering overnight test drives, allowing average jerk citizens like us to take Beamers home and drive them around the block, demanding high fives from our neighbors. So, naturally, they promote this by putting a mannequin in pajamas atop a billboard on I-95. Panicked motorists have been calling 911, worried it's a real person waiting to jump. They've apparently forgotten that this BMW dealership has put that crazy bastard up on that same billboard not once but twice before (and who knows, maybe more), always prompting the same calls to police. I suppose you have to give them credit for turning that classic BMW customer trait—obnoxiousness—back on the target market.

BMW goes balls-out for 5 Series teaser spot

Posted on Wed Nov 11 2009

This teaser spot for BMW's redesigned 5 Series is subtle, beautiful and surprisingly shot right in the automaker's own museum without CGI trickery. It was created using the BMW Museum's kinetic sculpture installation in Munich, an exhibit designed by Berlin agency Art + Com and awarded best of show at the One Show Design awards earlier this year. To see more than just a silhouette of the new sedan, you'll need to wait until Nov. 23, when BMW will broadcast the unveiling live on BMW.tv.

Don Draper covetously eyes BMW's 3 Series

Posted on Mon Aug 24 2009

Bmw-mad-men

Because the world needed more people talking about Mad Men, BMW sponsored the season premiere and put together this classy, mostly period-accurate ad for Vanity Fair, from GSD&M Idea City and photographer Anton Watts. But as Jalopnik points out, Don Draper drives a Cadillac Coupe de Ville. He certainly wouldn't drive the car featured in that ad. That thing might as well have been a spaceship in the early '60s. Of course, we could see these kinds of anachronisms more often if BMW gives the show any more money. Mad Max Men, here we come!

BMW whips Audi in impromptu chess game

Posted on Mon Apr 20 2009

Audi-bmw copy

BMW makes an audacious move here in its battle against rival Audi. The latter apparently erected a billboard taunting, "Your move, BMW," for its redesigned 2009 A4, on a thoroughfare in Santa Monica. Shortly thereafter, in a bit of inspired luxury auto one-upmanship, signage for BWM's M3 sedan appeared across the street with the line, "Checkmate." It's a fun, in-your-face concept that's fast earning kudos in auto and ad media worldwide. (Juggernaut Advertising, an independent agency in Santa Monica, created the response ad for BMW of Santa Monica.) Audi should just shrug it off and respond with an ad proposing "Two out of three?"
