Britney back to skimpy old self for Candie's

Candie's signed Britney Spears to model its clothes back in March and hosted exclusive backstage video footage of Spears' Virgin-sponsored concert tour, which appears to have a circus–burlesque–powertool theme. They even made a little teaser commercial (above) announcing the campaign, which will appear in print, on TV, online and in Kohl's. But now, finally, we've gotten a sneak peak of the actual print work. However, the rest of the campaign isn't coming out until this summer. Ms. Spears looks great in the shots, so naturally, people are already suggesting that they're digitally enhanced. It's Spears' first apparel endorsement ever, but she's not in bad company. Previous Candie's girls include Fergie, Hayden Panettiere, Kelly Clarkson, Hilary Duff and Ashley Simpson-Wentz. Still, Candie's is taking a big chance with Spears. Though she's unlikely to go all Chris Brown and start a worldwide outcry against domestic violence, she hasn't been out of rehab all that long, and is purportedly trying to get out from under daddy's thumb and back in contact with her manager/alleged drug dealer Sam Lufti. Hopefully, Candie's will make it to the actual campaign before Ms. Spears has another catastrophic meltdown.

Virgin Mobile in front row for Britney's tour

Circus Tour copy

Yes, we know it makes one a bit queasy to see the word "mother," or for that matter, the word "virgin," in close proximity to the name "Britney Spears." Our alarm at seeing this threesome in the headline of a press release was allayed, however, when we read on to learn that Virgin Mobile USA had enlisted creative agency Mother New York to help get mileage out of the brand's sponsorship of the 2009 Britney Spears Circus Tour. As the photo here shows, one feature of the campaign (which coincides with the launch of Virgin Mobile's Helio Ocean 2 multimedia device) is an opportunity to win a seat upgrade at one of the shows by dint of speedy texting. See a larger image here. Best of luck to one and all!

Britney teases the masses with VMA ads

Russellbritney MTV's new Video Music Award promos include none other than Ms. Britney Spears, looking remarkably clean, clear-eyed and adorably flirty. Spots here and here. Speculation is rife that Ms. Spears may be up for another comeback attempt at this year's VMAs. After her horrendous performance last year, the specter of another delightful train-wreck really is reason enough to watch. The promos have done their job well, even though MTV refuses to say if Brit's a confirmed act. MTV says of course they'd have Britney back, despite (or probably because of) the fiasco. "Everyone deserves a second or third chance, right?" Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks, told the AP, adding that they're trying to think of ways "every minute of the day" to top last year's Britney opener. I think the only solution is an obvious one: It's Britney Part II, bitch.

Hi, this is Britney, can I put you on hold?

Britneyspears Which celebrity has the ideal personality to be a call-center representative? Proving that consumer research can never be too odd, a Maritz Poll put that question to customers of banks and credit-card brands, in the interest of helping companies learn what sort of people they should hire to staff their call centers. Choosing from the poll’s list of celebs, just 1 percent of respondents said they’d want to hear Britney Spears, Whitney Houston or Rosie O’Donnell on the other end of the phone in such a role. Ten percent picked Bill Clinton, who ran slightly ahead of Ellen DeGeneres and Bill Gates (9 percent apiece). Far ahead of the pack were Oprah Winfrey (23 percent) and Kelly Ripa (19 percent). Must be nice for Winfrey and Ripa to know a second career has promise for them if the TV thing doesn’t pan out.

What, doesn’t it look like Britney Spears?

Spearsperfume Britney Spears’ new perfume ad has folks buzzing about what fiendish spell she must have cast to inhabit the body of an unsuspecting and malnourished 18-year-old. But what’s with all the conspiracy theory about a body double? For one, wouldn’t they have gone ahead and sprung for a believable head double? For another, it’s an ad, people, not a product of high ethical standards like a magazine cover.

Britney ‘total nut job’ billboards come down

Britney1_2 So, Britney Spears and I finally agree on something: We both hate the MJ Morning Show on WFLZ-FM in Tampa. I hate it because I hate all morning DJs. She hates it because a few of their billboards use her shaved-head crazy face to illustrate just how wacky the show can get. Britney’s lawyers, unimpressed by the tomfoolery, say the pop star’s face is too valuable for anything but “authorized commercial exploitations,” and threatened to sue if the billboards weren’t taken down. They were, but I’m not sure why Britney was so peeved. If none of the stunts she’s pulled over the past few months have driven anyone to call child services yet, then some dipshit radio host’s local ad won’t hurt her career all that much. And honestly, at first I thought it was a photo of Butterbean Esch.

Naked Britney allowed on Tokyo subways

Harpersbritney_2 I’ve never been very interested in taking the Tokyo subway. The thought of being pushed into a car by people paid to do so is a bit much. But now I’m even less interested. What, pray tell, does any of this have to do with Britney Spears on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar? It appears the officials who run the Tokyo subway are now permitting the magazine to run a poster of this cover (which is being published for the October issue in Japan) within the system, reversing an earlier decision that it was “overly stimulating.” (Subway officials had wanted to cover it up below Brit’s elbow.) Lest you think I don’t like the thought of nude, pregnant ladies, that’s not the case. I just don’t like the thought of more pictures of Britney.

'Control' yourself, Britney Spears' perfume is on the way

Britneyspears_2Pre-order yours now! Britney Spears’ new fragrance, curiously named “In Control” comes out this month. I would like to know what exactly Brit is in control of lately? It’s not her husband, her public image, her son’s security in his high chair, her fashion sense, her career or her finances.  If I learned anything in the '80s, this is the one who's supposed to be in control. Of course, even she's failed to recover from 2004's major "malfunction."

Britney Spears: From pole-dancing to pro-life monument

Britneyspears_1 In the pantheon of celebrity motherhood, Britney Spears may the most overexposed. And she just became more so, thanks to Daniel Edwards, who has cast a life-sized statue of Britney—nude, pregnant and downward-doggie over a bearskin rug—as a pro-life monument. According to the artist, the reason why Brit was one of Google’s most searched for images is because “people are inspired by the beauty of a pregnant woman.” Maybe Edwards was blinded by his pro-life sentiments—the Manhattan Right to Life Committee donated dedication materials to the Brooklyn gallery showing the work—but one has only to page through a back issue of US Weekly or Star to know that pregnant Brit was just not pretty. Nor does post-partum Brit appear to be ideal. (After all, she was spotted driving her SUV with her infant on her lap. Not the kind of baby-dangling shenanigans Michael Jackson made famous, but still a safety no-no.) Then again, this press release says Edwards wasn’t using tabloid photos as his inspiration. Instead, he frequented Las Vegas’ Madame Tussauds’ in order to gawk at their likeness of a pole-dancing Britney. Truly a muse to inspire a monument to young motherhood.
