Foxwoods brings back 'The Wonder of It All'
Foxwoods is reintroducing its once-ubiquitous and oft-maligned ad theme song, "The Wonder of It All," and you could be the one singing it in upcoming commercials. The casino explains: "Anyone with even the slightest clue about pop culture throughout the 1990s could likely sing a few lines." True, but we've been working so hard to scrub those schmaltzy brass notes from our collective memory. Why make us relive the nightmare? Foxwoods says it wants to "find a new voice" for the song through a contest that invites artists to upload their own MP3 versions. Jeez, instead of sub-Sinatra rendition by John Pizzarelli (who?), there'll be dozens of renditions floating around the Web! Good lord, Dokken could give it a go, with harmonies from the chicken. I'm betting that no matter which version wins, the jingle will still sound like craps. |

Obama on Indiana casino ad: No, you can't
Everyone still wants a piece of Barack Obama, but a casino in Indiana is among the first advertisers to be pressured to pull an Obama-themed ad. The spot, shown above, features a pretty good Obama sound-alike (it's not actually him) talking up the grand opening of the Indiana Live! Casino. "Our time for change has come," the voiceover says. "Months ago we began the work of making sure that the Indiana! Live Casino is superior to anything that existed in Indiana. Years from now, you will say this was the place where Indiana remembered what it means to have fun." At the request of the Obama administration, the whole campaign's being pulled. The man behind the ads, Dennis Gomes, cynically admits he was hoping all along to get a request from the White House to pull them. "Sure enough, everything I thought would happen, happened," he says. |

A few beers will impair anyone's judgmentAlong with promoting real brands, advertising has brought to life any number of fictitious brands over the years. This ad for the Paris Las Vegas casino, by that city's R&R Partners, adds some nice ones to the roster—especially the Napoleon Stout and the Marie Antoinette Ale. (See the full ad here.) But when's the last time a man walked into a bar anywhere other than France and found two French beers on tap? Other readers will be scandalized by the notion that Napoleon would betray the ideals of the French Revolution by dallying with Marie Antoinette, of all aristos. But this does lend support to the "Everything's sexier in Paris Las Vegas" theme line. —Posted by Mark Dolliver |
