Ireland shows a gay-marriage ad done right

Commercials in support of gay marriage are everywhere these days. Lots of them are less than impressive. Here's one of the better ones, from Ireland, showing a straight man who's faced with quite a task in trying to secure his girlfriend's hand in marriage. Via Osocio. UPDATE: Well, well. As The Dog & Pony Show points out, the Irish ad looks like a cloned copy of the spot below, from the U.S. The earlier ad is listed in Advertolog's archive as a 2005 spot by Publicis in New York for MTV.

Ben & Jerry's celebrates gay marriage in VT

Hh

To celebrate the passage of legislation legalizing gay marriage in its home state of Vermont, Ben & Jerry's is renaming its Chubby Hubby ice cream "Hubby Hubby" for the month of September. The move is part of a promo with equal-rights group Freedom to Marry. The new name seems a bit masculine, but the brand maintains it covers lesbians as well. (Covering lesbians in ice cream is something I've always supported.) The "Hubby Hubby" name is largely symbolic, however, as they're not actually changing the packaging for pints sold in stores.

NOM airing first anti-gay-marriage ad in NY

This new ad from the National Organization for Marriage—its first TV spot opposing attempts to legalize same-sex marriage in New York—is a fairly typical cut-and-paste negative ad. Inveighing against same-sex marriage, it uses smiling-bride-and-groom wedding photos, images of kids piling out of yellow school buses and a somber message about the Death Star blowing up our planet should same-sex marriages occur (not really the last one, but it does use some classic scare tactics). One of the most skewered phrases in the spot (the quote is blown up for maximum horror and derision) is "a teachable moment." That's what the administrator of the Creative Arts charter school in San Francisco called it when some first graders were allowed to attend a same-sex wedding. Turns out the wedding was for their teacher, the trip was suggested by one of the parents in the class (the rest were free to opt out), and the kids were not at the ceremony but lined up outside the doors to throw flower petals on their teacher. Seems to me that's all kids that age want to do—throw flower petals at weddings—any and all weddings. All the kids seemed very excited about it. One of the students, 6-year-old Nolan Alexander, told a reporter that marriage is "two people falling in love. It means that you stay with someone for the rest of your life." Um, clearly that kid needs more education.

Miss California anti-gay-marriage ad debuts

Ya know, there was a time when you could depend on religious zealots to deliver hateful, blustery dogmatism. But this new breed just doesn't have the same fire. Case in point: Miss California's new anti-gay-marriage ad for the National Organization for Marriage. The title of the commercial is "No Offense," which begs the question of how NOM thinks that's going to get across the message that gays are immoral and disgusting. At least its earlier "Gathering Storm" spot showed a healthy amount of fear-mongering. That they're strapping a glorified swimsuit model to the front of their movement is apt, because evidently they're as clueless as she is.

Gay storm clouds become darker and gayer

The National Organization for Marriage's "Gathering Storm" PSA, which we wrote about earlier this month, was morally reprehensible and about as genuine as a set of false teeth. But at about a minute long, at least it didn't waste too much of your time—which is more than we can say for Funny or Die's parody here, which sputters along for almost three minutes before it finally gets funny at the end. But that makes sense, since Funny or Die is owned by Will Ferrell's production company. Kudos to them for actually setting up a Giant Gay Repellent Umbrella Web page, though.

Anti-gay testimonials were faked. Shocking!

The National Organization for Marriage is apparently spending $1.5 million to air this anti-gay-marriage ad, but some of that money was probably used to hire actors. Yes, a testimonial from "real people" on the TV box turned out to be fake. We know, we're shocked and appalled, too! Are viewers really so gullible—do they have such faith in televised testimonials—that they really believe people who oppose gay marriage are somehow more "real" than those who support it? These same viewers are probably Slimsuiting themselves thin as we speak!
