Finally, a Wii made just for women: the Shii

Probably NSFW. Ladies, pick up a Shii today. Unless you're completely sickened and offended by it. This clip is from a comedy show in Belgium, which explains a few things. The censors over there probably asked them to add that uncalled-for scene at the end. Via YesButNoButYes.

Real-life Little Mac coulda been a contender

Few old-school Nintendo games are as memorable as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, which kept an entire generation of young males too busy pushing buttons to actually learn self-defense of any kind. Now, as Nintendo prepares to bring back Punch-Out (minus Iron Mike), the marketing team gives us this "Where are they now?" retrospective on the game's pugilistic protagonist, Little Mac. The two-minute video isn't quite as funny as it could be, but fans of the original game will enjoy nostalgic flashbacks like Doc the trainer leading Little Mac on his bicycle (which, by the way, is nowhere near as intense without the original music). UPDATE: I should note that this isn't the first time someone's brought Punch-Out into the real world. YouTube is flooded with user-generated clips that likely inspired the official video. You can check out my personal favorites here and here.

Amid downturn, WPP brass poke each other

Sorrell-facebook

We all deal with economic catastrophe in our own ways. For WPP's top echelon of executives, it means enjoying a little Wii and Facebook. A new BusinessWeek story recounts a meeting in Athens, Greece, in October where WPP's board discussed—wait for it—how the company could prepare itself for digital media. The Internet is big, who knew? (Agency Spy, for one, is incensed about this.) A top priority for these execs: getting Facebook accounts. In this endeavor, WPP's titans of advertising got help from none other than Mark Zuckerberg himself. BusinessWeek reports that 63-year-old WPP CEO Martin Sorrell has already lost interest in the site, but others have been liking it. "The directors had fun, but the exercise was meant to help them fully grasp the phenomenon of social networks and how they may affect the ad business," according to BusinessWeek. Ah, but there's more. Apparently, WPP's top 3,000 managers get training courses on things like Twitter. I don't begrudge anyone for trying to make money, but training ad people on Twitter? I tried to find Sir Martin on Facebook to write on his wall. Alas, I can't seem to locate him.

EA caught using Xbox gameplay in Wii spot

Xbox_wii copy

An Electronic Arts commercial for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 has been banned in the U.K. in its current form for using Xbox 360 footage to promote the Wii version of the game. In the ad, Tiger is seen swinging a Wiimote, and the whole ad is overset with the Wii logo, but the graphics are Xbox. In its defense, EA said the Wii footage was not "of broadcast quality." Aside from a few nice Xbox shadows, the difference isn't that dramatic in the comparison above (larger version of the image here); it's certainly not as drastic as this tongue-in-cheek depiction. Even if it were, EA's solution is baffling. C'mon guys, video-game ads have been getting around showing real gameplay through good old-fashioned creativity since the Atari. You intercut small amounts of game footage into bigger amounts of non-game footage to create an amusing movie, an elaborate musical theater production, or even a full-length trailer in beautiful HD animation. Stealing another man's graphics? That's like claiming Tiger Woods can walk on water or something. It's just plain sacrilegious. Via Offworld.
