Rhett & Link's zoo spot has a familiar aroma
Rhett & Link are back with another spot, posted above, in their I Love Local Commercials series. For this one, which advertises the Central Florida Zoo, the guys decided to return to "a simpler time in our lives, when something as natural as animal poop made us laugh." There is certainly lots of that here, as well as urination and a couple of humping giant tortoises. The Auckland Zoo in New Zealand got there first, however, in a spot that paid off the poo a bit better. As always, Rhett & Link has also posted a behind-the-scenes video from the shoot. —Posted by Tim Nudd Previously on AdFreak: |

Dopey mammoths stump for San Diego Zoo
Two not-so-smart mammoths hit just the right notes in these humorous ads by M&C Saatchi for the San Diego Zoo's "Elephant Odyssey" exhibit, a production "12,000 years in the making." In the spot above, they make the mistake of taking a mud bath in a tar pit, and only one prehistoric pachyderm is left bobbing in the ooze at the end. In the spot below, the wooly wonders get more than they bargained for when they stop to play with a "sabertooth kitty." Tusk tusk tusk, what a shame. |

WongDoody improves penguins for zoo ads"We took a very simple, recognizable element, the penguin, and made it artful and unexpected. It's eye-catching for adults and children." So says WongDoody chairman and executive creative director Tracy Wong of his agency's "More colorful than ever" ads for an upcoming penguin exhibit at Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo. Visually, the ads are imaginative and appealing, and perhaps they even evoke the sense of childlike wonder the shop says it was striving for. Still, they imply the birds' familiar monochrome color scheme wasn't quite up to snuff. And parents could be in for a long day at the zoo trying to explain that no matter what the posters suggest, penguins don't come in paisley. Except maybe in the gift shop. |

Get friendly with the furry? I politely declineThe Richards Group's campaign for the Lucky Monkey Petting Zoo is very cute, until you get down to the tagline: "Get friendly with the furry." I'm sorry, but that sounds a bit unsavory. Is this a heavy petting zoo? Haven't we learned the dangers of getting too cozy with wild things? That's right: you could get your face chewed off. See larger images of the ads here. Oh, that chimp costume in my cube? It's left over from the AdFreak Halloween party. I'm hoping my idea for "Furry Fridays" catches on. SFW, of course. |

Go primitive with Valentine's Day at the zooThe move by New Zealand's Wellington Zoo to open its doors for "adults only" activities on the evening of Valentine's Day sounds objectionable, and probably illegal. But actually, in a very unexpected way, it's rather sweet. The ads, including the video below from Saatchi Wellington (which has NSFW audio), hint at the possibility of real monkey business—but actually they're just suggesting you have dinner and drinks there. Now granted, there are about a thousand ways this could all go horribly wrong. But disregarding possible animal maulings or impromptu bestiality, "a candlelit dinner for two, served in your own romantic spot overlooking an animal enclosure," sounds pretty fun. The lucky couple who scores a table facing the chimp enclosure will have stories to tell for years. |

Animals just want a little whiff of you is allWonder what the carnivorous animals at the zoo are thinking of you when you're gawking at them? An ad for Salt Lake City's Hogle Zoo (via Richter7 of that city) has the answer. See the full ad here. It'd probably be best not to aggravate the situation by using bacon dental floss as part of your oral-hygiene regimen before heading off to the zoo. |
