Tweetup throwdown: Jaffe v. Marchese

Twitter-fight

As the man who coined the phrase that rings through the halls of all advertising conferences—"Join the conversation"—Joseph Jaffe can lay claim to the mantle of social-media guru. As such, it isn't surprising that the self-described chief interrupter at Crayon is throwing a Tweetup on Wednesday in New York to celebrate his breaking the mythical 10,000-follower barrier, which, depending on your point of view, ranks somewhere between hitting .300 in tee ball and Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak. Ah, but Jaffe has competition from a new kid on the block: Joe Marchese, president of Social Vibe. Marchese, whose company runs cause-marketing programs for brands in social media, is holding his own happy hour tomorrow, also in New York. What's a Twitterer to do? Let's look at the factors to consider. 1) Location. Jaffe's Tweetup is on the Upper East Side; Marchese's is on the Lower East Side. Advantage: Marchese, unless you're in a fraternity, play beer pong often and wear a baseball hat pulled low. 2) Liquor. Hey, it's a recession, OK? Jaffe: first drink free. Marchese: open bar. Advantage Marchese. 3) Openness. Jaffe: Attendees must follow him and the bar (@southernhospitality) (@BBQNYC) to get the free drink. Marchese: Attendees must follow him and @ him a message to get a DM with details to the invite-only affair. Advantage: Jaffe. Overall, I have to give it to Marchese on points. Has the mantle passed? UPDATE: Marchese is talking smack by telling those who are unable to secure invites to his happy hour that they can always head to Jaffe's party instead.

Morrissey - well played Sir...that was hilarious.

I have to say that Marchese wins hands down by virtue of the fact he's a social butterfly with superior tweet-up experience. I am a rookie at best.

The only things I have going over Joe are my rugged good looks, the curiosity factor of seeing me 40 pounds lighter and the off chance of making a cameo appearance on JaffeJuiceTV.

All in all, one of the Joe's is going down (although to our credit we did try and combine the two events...but sadly it was a little too late)

Two Twitter Heavyweights.

I am not a twitter heavyweight. They just needed to find a fighter that was pale enough to put my head on. Not an easy task!

i certainly hope that jaffe is doing this tongue in cheek, otherwise he doesn't really get the pitfalls of Twitter. Reaching 10,000 or any number is no real accomplishment. I'm a follower and he bugs the crap outta me.

Brian,

The Twitter handle for Southern Hospitality is not "@southernhospitality."
It is "@BBQNYC."

http://twitter.com/BBQNYC

Sorry Brian, I feel like I've been sending you corrections for the past two days. Just shows what a dedicated reader I am.

If it makes you feel any better, I also corrected Southern Hospitality for misspelling "Memphis" on their Twitter bio (I'm from Memphis, btw).

cheers,
Chris

Oh, and they corrected it.

The only possible attraction would be the thought of prizing a drink from the grasp of the notoriously tightfisted Jaffe. Actually even that would not convince me to follow him on Twitter...
